Abstract

Compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, duplex stainless steels are distinguished by stable ferrite/austenite microstructures and are fine recognized for their greater corrosion resistance and greater strength. Joining of the duplex stainless steels is a difficult task, as the weld joints have low impact toughness at heat-affected zone (HAZ) with fusion welding and susceptibility to solidification cracking. One has to carry out pre-heating and control the cooling rates of welded joints in order to get the desired quality. This paper analyzed the works reported by earlier researchers on joining of duplex steels using various arc and non-arc welding processes. Most of the researchers studied microstructure, mechanical properties like tensile strength, hardness and impact strength. Much effort, however, is not being made on fatigue and creep monitoring. Very little work on corrosion is recorded at elevated temperatures of duplex steel welded joints. The study of welded joints by finite elements focuses on limited research. This paper provides an exhaustive analysis on the impact of various welding procedures on stainless duplex steels.
