Handbook of Oxidative Stress in Cancer: Mechanistic Aspects

Abstract

The importance of oxidative process and underlying dangers is always undermined in normal physiology as evolutionary mechanism ensured availability of abundant anti-oxidant defenses. However, these mechanisms neutralize reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and further participate in intricate cell signaling pathways, including cell death, proliferation, angiogenesis; which are being defined as the research is progressing. It is proven beyond doubt that multitude of disease pathology originates from oxidative stress, and few of cancers types are no exception. The etiology involves reactive oxygen species that initiate genotoxic pathways and ultimately carcinogenesis. Hence, early in the disease process, if biomarkers of oxidative stress are found useful for diagnosis; it may go a long way in improving the prognosis of these cancer types. This chapter overviews the concept of biomarker and biomarker research in cancer along with the status of current oxidative stress diagnostic biomarkers and proposes a way ahead to further increase the utility of well-known oxidative stress biomarkers in cancer diagnosis and prognosis.
