Abstract

Rising main or pum** main is used to convey the water from source or reservoir to water treatment plant and further to the balancing reservoir or elevated service reservoir. If water treatment plant is located above reservoir sump level, water can be transmitted using direct pum** or combined pum** and gravity technique. This paper reviews the method for the analysis and design of combined pum** and gravity transmission system by provision of break pressure tank for Amravati water supply scheme. The water is lifted to break pressure tank by pum** main and thereafter, it is conveyed to water treatment plant using gravity main. The variable cost parameters of the transmission system such as cost of pipes, pumps and energy are studied. Diameters of both the pipes were found to achieve cost effectiveness and performance. Further, an alternate water transmission system was studied and designed. Lagrange multiplier method was used to develop mathematical model.
