Abstract
In Mongolia, about 111 iron ore deposits and occurrences are known to exist in the country; however, only five deposits are of marginal economic interest. Twenty deposits have small reserve base, and the remaining 86 are iron occurrences and mineral showings. Detailed mineral exploration for iron ore deposits has so far been limited, and only reserves of the Tumur Tolgoi and Bayan Gol deposits have been estimated as of industrial category. Most of the iron ore deposits are of contact-metasomatic skarn type followed by hematite-magnetite-limonite deposits of sedimentary type originating from ferruginous sedimentary beds by metamorphism and metasomatism. Most iron deposits in Mongolia are closely associated with manganese mineralization.
