Abstract
Coronary artery fistulas (CAF) are abnormal terminations of the coronary arteries. CAFs are direct connections between a coronary artery and a cardiac chamber or a vessel close to the heart. The clinical characteristic of CAFs is dependent on the severity of the left-to-right shunt. Most adult patients are usually asymptomatic. If a large left-to-right shunt exists, congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and rupture or thrombosis of the fistula may occur in early life. Correct and early diagnosis of coronary artery fistulas is important, and early surgical correction is indicated because of the high prevalence of late symptoms and complications. Traditionally, conventional angiography was the gold standard for the diagnosis of coronary anomalies. With more frequent use of multidetector computed tomography (CT) in chest and cardiac imaging, the incidence of coronary artery fistulas has been increasing.
