Effects of Media on Science Learning of Chinese Youths: A Synthesis of Literature and a Case Study

Abstract

At present, many types of public media have built a ubiquitous informal learning environment, which affects the intellectual growth of youths formally and informally. This chapter first synthesizes the current literature and then reports a survey study of a convenience sample on the effects of media on youths. It has been found that different forms of media have obvious effects on youths’ science learning in China. Meanwhile there are two problems to address: that present media content lacks high-quality scientific content designed for adolescents and that the examination-oriented education system limits adolescents’ time spent on science learning through media. We suggest that the quality of original Chinese content needs improvement and that the examination-oriented education system should be reformed.
