Synopsis

Sandy beach systems consist of wave and current deposited sand. However, the wide range of sand sizes and wave conditions produces tremendous variation in natural beach systems. This variation extends to their sediment characteristics and structures. This paper presents the results of sediment sampling, box coring of structures and observations of bedforms on several beaches in southeast Australia located in various wave-sediment environments. A description of each sub-environment across the beach systems and a general classification of beach environments, sediments and structures is presented.
