Sandy Beaches as Ecosystems

Part of the book series: Developments in Hydrobiology ((DIHY,volume 19))

Abstract

The swimming crab Ovalipes punctatus (de Haan) is commonly found on the sandy beaches of the south and east coasts of South Africa. These crabs prey extensively on the bivalve and gastropod populations which occur on these beaches. An energy flow diagram has been constructed for the sandy beach macrofauna of the eastern Cape but mollusc production removed by the swimming crab Ovalipes was only roughly estimated (McLachlan et al., 1981).
