Abstract

The proceedings of the 1972 NATO Advanced Study Institute in Information Science reported that there is a great need to create, develop and strengthen a theoretical foundation for information science. This theoretical foundation was seen to focus on a “solid, consistent, theoretical explication of the notion of information”. Thus, the task at hand is to study the fundamental principles underlying the structure and use of information. The first pay-off in studying the nature of information, as seen in the 1972 proceedings, is in terms of develo** a “true” science of information. A second, and equally important, pay-off is in the practical domain of information system design, implementation, management, and usage. Thus, the task of studying the nature of information is to facilitate information science’s becoming a science and to facilitate information science’s contributing to society in terms of better designed information systems.
