Abstract

Lipopolysaccharides of gram-negative bacteria have been the subject of numerous reviews which deal with their structure (Lüderitz et al., 1971; Wilkinson, 1977), biosynthesis (Nikaido, 1973; Wright and Kanegasaki, 1971) and receptor activity (Iindberg, 1977, 1973; Rapin and Kalckar, 1971). In this article we discuss the role of lipopolysaccharide as a bacteriophage receptor. We have not attempted to include all bacteriophage—lipopolysaccharide interactions but, instead, have limited our discussion to a few systems which we feel best illustrate the receptor role of lipopolysaccharide.
