Abstract
Looking back, it is remarkable how far the space business has progressed in the forty years since the launch of Sputnik in October 1957. Earth’s first artificial satellite was just 58 cm in diameter and weighed 83.6 kg. Satellites have evolved and matured since that modest start. Today’s satellites, some weighing many tonnes, fulfill a variety of missions: communications, remote sensing and map**, DTH TV, real-time intelligence gathering, and research. Here I include the Hubble Telescope, the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and others, all of which are designed to unlock the secrets of the Universe.
