Abstract

After a general survey of Electrocatalysis, and of the techniques known as “in situ” infrared reflectance spectroscopies, the application of EMIRS, (i. e. electrochemically modulated infrared reflectance spectroscopy) to Electrocatalysis is considered, in the light of recent results concerning the identification of adsorbed species produced in the chemisorption or oxidation of small organic molecules on noble metal electrodes. The role of poisons, which decrease the catalytic properties of electrode surfaces, is particularly stressed and it is shown how an extensive use of electrochemical techniques, like cyclic voltammetry or pulse potential voltammetry, is essential for a correct interpretation of the spectroscopic results. The adsorption of carbon monoxide on various substrates is studied quantitatively, in order to discuss the existence of interactions, either between different types of adsorbed species or with the substrate.
