Abstract
The association between obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been unclear, non-consistent and controversial. Recent developments have, however, apparently clarified these enigmatic conditions by including not only the total mass of body fat (obesity), but also the distribution of body fat. In epidemiological contexts the latter is conveniently measured as the waist/hip circumference ratio (WHR). This area of research has been reviewed repeatedly in its different sections in recent reviews. Due to the limited space available the reader will be referred to these reviews for detailed references.
