Abstract

Seed legumes are famous for yield instability and related high flower and pod shedding rates. The reproductive physiology post-pollination is considered in this paper.

Factors determining pollen germination, stigmate receptivity, and ovule fertilization are reviewed. After fertilization, the stages of reproductive organ development are described, and their progression on the plant analyzed and modeled.

Abortion events either early or late have been explained either by hormonal or by source-sink competition phenomena. Modified chronologies or morphologies in reproductive organ development, by genetic means or by use of growth regulators, help in the understanding and in the modification of abortion frequencies.
