Abstract

Many studies have led to the conclusion that macrophage can contribute in a variety of ways to host resistance against tumors. Non immune inflammation represents the major mechanism by which indirect activation of macrophages occurs in vivo. This process induces proliferation (GIROUD et al., 1977) and activation (KIGER et al., 1978) of macrophages which render them cytotoxic against tumor target cells in vitro (POSTE, 1979). On the other hand, in vivo, FAUVE and HEVIN (1977) had shown that an inflammatory reaction, induced by inoculation of talc embedded in calcium phosphate gel, was able to inhibit the growth of spontaneous metastases in the lungs. The purpose of the present work is to study the effect of a non immune acute inflammation on the growth and metastasis processes in different tumors models. Further mechanisms by which inflammation could modify tumor dissemination are tested.
