Abstract

The Caledonian metamorphic rocks of Ireland occur in a series of inliers (Fig. 1), and for this reason a well-defined pattern of metamorphic zonation is not seen as clearly as elsewhere in the Caledonides. The metamorphic events occurred from mid Cambrian to Devonian times and locally overprint some earlier metamorphic events in inliers of pre-Caledonian basement. The Caledonian’ sensu lato’ events can be grouped into three main tectono-thermal episodes: 1. GRAMPIAN (mid to late Cambrian through earliest Ordovician locally), 2. MID ORDOVICIAN (generally pre-Caradocian and broadly equivalent to Taconic), 3. CALEDONIAN’ sensu stricto’ (mid Silurian through mid Devonian). These main episodes, and particularly the Grampian, are themselves composite and display sufficient internal variability to allow for the definition of sub-units.
