Abstract
We conjecture that the global, large-scale structure of the solar corona represents a form of minimum energy state. We illustrate this conjecture with the help of an approximate model applicable to quiet solar minimum conditions. Possible implications and applications of the conjecture are discussed in the context of coronal mass ejections and of empirical modeling of the solar corona.
