Abstract
Surgical education research is based more firmly in the social sciences than in the hard sciences because of the subject matters it investigates. This chapter introduces key features of some of the major quantitative and qualitative approaches used in such research. It is designed to help those with little acquaintance with this area to understand better the nature, strengths and limitations of the research on which much of this book rests. It is not a sufficiently detailed account to act as a primer on surgical education research methods. It uses examples and case studies to illustrate many of the points made.
