Samenvatting
Voor het goed laten functioneren van ons lichaam is water essentieel. Water dient als bouwstof, als transportmiddel, als oplosmiddel en houdt het lichaam op temperatuur. Het lichaam van een volwassene bevat ongeveer 60 % water. De hoeveelheid water hangt samen met het gewicht, de leeftijd, het geslacht en de lichaamssamenstelling. Water wordt verdeeld over de intra- en extracellulaire ruimtes van het lichaam. De waterhuishouding wordt nauwkeurig gereguleerd. Wanneer de waterinname (via dranken en voedsel) en -uitscheiding (via nieren, huid, longen en feces) even groot zijn, wordt van een goede vochtbalans gesproken. Om de vochtbalans te handhaven onder normale omstandigheden heeft een volwassene 1,5 tot 2 liter drinkvocht per dag nodig, maar dit is afhankelijk van diverse factoren. Verstoring van de vochtbalans kan zowel leiden tot een tekort aan water (dehydratie) als een overmaat aan water (waterintoxicatie). Deze fenomenen vergen een verschillende behandeling.
