Volgens de klassieke crisistheorie (Aguilera, 1990) is er sprake van een crisis wanneer de homeostase van een systeem wordt verstoord: hoe sterk of precair dat evenwicht ook is, dreiging ontstaat wanneer het systeem wordt geconfronteerd met een situatie die de draagkracht of het oplossingsrepertoire overstijgt.
