Abstract
Ag-sheathed Bi-2212 (Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox) tape has been melt processed in 1% and 7.5% O2 remainder N2 atmospheres. In 7.5% O2 the melt from which 2212 forms on cooling contained liquid, (Sr,Ca)CuO2 (1:1), and (Sr,Ca)2Cu3 (2:1), and in 1% O2 it contained these same phases plus a Cu-free phase tentatively identified as Bi2(Sr,Ca)3Ox. The 2:1 phase appears to be advantageous for develo** a homogeneous, well-aligned microstructure using melt processing, but the large grain size of 1:1 and the Cu-free phase cause severe problems with develo** this desirable microstructure. It is concluded that processing in reduced pO2 (1% and 7.5% O2) is not advantageous for develo** a homogeneous, highly-aligned microstructure by melt processing.
