Abstract
Beyond statistics, data is also analyzed in data mining and by methods from machine learning and artificial intelligence. In addition, data science is currently propagated as a new discipline. What is the role of statistics then in this diversity of methods and disciplines? We believe that statistics is the most important discipline for the adequate design of the systematic collection of data and for the finding of structures in the data to gain deeper insights from them, in particular concerning the analysis and quantification of uncertainty.
