Abstract
Elementary concepts of complexity science and their applications are conveyed using examples from disease research. The consequences of nonlinear functions for understanding the development of chronic diseases are demonstrated using the example of the logistic equation. The analysis of changing complexity in various heart diseases is shown as a practical example.
