Heterocyclische Verbindungen enthalten außer C-Atomen ein oder mehrere Heteroatome als Ringglieder, z. B. Stickstoff, Sauerstoff oder Schwefel. Man unterscheidet heteroaliphatische und heteroaromatische Verbindungen. Ringe aus fünf und sechs Atomen sind am beständigsten.
