Abstract
The different theories for the description of complexes are presented and their strengths and limitations are pointed out. The valence bond theory (VB theory), the ligand field (LF) theory, and the molecular orbital (MO) theory are presented in the order of their historical development. Complex properties requiring explanation include coordination number (CN), coordination geometry, stability of complexes, their color, and magnetism. For all these models, it is necessary to know or determine the valence electron configuration of the metal centers. For this reason, we start with a review of the essential basics of electron configuration and the term symbols, which we need for an understanding of the further chapters.
