Neonreklame, Helium als Füllgas in Ballons, Xenonscheinwerfer: diese Begriffe sind Ihnen wahrscheinlich bekannt, doch was steckt dahinter? Damit nicht genug: Radon in unterirdischen Heilstollen, mit Argon gefüllte Glühbirnen, KrF+ und Perxenate als stärkste bisher bekannte Oxidationsmittel?
Dieses Kapitel gibt Ihnen kurzen, aber umfassenden Einblick in die Welt der Edelgase. Sie haben richtig gelesen: Man hat die Vertreter dieser Gruppe so genannt, weil sie kaum oder gar nicht mit anderen Elementen oder Verbindungen reagieren. Trotzdem bieten sie hochinteressante Einblicke und sind aus vielen technischen Anwendungen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Wir spannen hier den Bogen von der Zeit ihrer Entdeckung vor rund hundert Jahren bis heute, und die Erforschung dieser Elemente ist noch lange nicht abgeschlossen.
