Zusammenfassung

Das Lindern von Schmerzen und die Unterstützung von schmerzleidenden Menschen stellt eine Kernaufgabe der Professionellen im Pflege- und Gesundheitswesen dar. Das Phänomen Schmerz ist ein sehr heterogenes und komplexes. Entsprechend sind die Anforderungen an die Behandlung und Begleitung von schmerzleidenden PatientInnen und deren ethischer Implikationen komplex.

Der Beitrag beginnt mit einer kurzen Einführung zu Fakten, Zahlen und Definitionen. Um das Phänomen Schmerz greifbarer zu machen, wird dann eine phänomenologische Beschreibung durchgeführt. Anschließend werden einige ethische Implikationen der Zielsetzung der Schmerzlinderung exemplarisch herausgearbeitet. Zur Systematisierung werden die vier Prinzipien nach Beauchamp und Childress angewendet. Abschließend wird der normative Status der Zielsetzung der Schmerzlinderung kritisch hinterfragt.
