Aristoteles und auch einige islamische Denker glaubten, die Existenz des Menschen beginnt, sobald der Fötus eine menschliche Form angenommen hat. Für Juden fängt das Leben erst mit der Geburt an, für Katholiken hingegen bereits mit der Empfängnis. Eine moderne Ansicht wiederum hält den Zeitpunkt, zu dem „das Neugeborene in der Lage ist, zu atmen“, für den entscheidenden Moment. Nach einer weiteren Auffassung schließlich – und diese vertrete auch ich – beginnt das Leben, wenn die thalamokortikalen Verbindungen entstanden sind und der Säugling ein Bewusstsein haben kann. Dies ist bei Frühgeborenen ab der 23. bis 25. SSW der Fall. Daher sollten sie als Person mit den gleichen Menschenrechten wie erwachsene Patienten behandelt werden. Durch Entwicklungsbegleitung und/oder Haut-zu-Haut-Kontakt kann die Bewusstseinsbildung gefördert werden.
