Zusammenfassung
Die Geschichte der Zytokine gehört zu den aktuellsten Entwicklungen in der Regulation des Immunsystems und der Hämatopoese. Welche Rolle der Zufall dabei spielte — und weiterhin spielen wird — und wie unterschiedliche Forscherteams dieselbe Substanzen fanden, beschrieb Professor Marco Baggiolini bei der Verleihung der Robert-Koch-Medaille im Jahr 2000 in Bonn. Während Versuche zu Interleukin-1 (IL-1) vorgenommen wurden, fand ein Doktorand, dass es einen zusätzlichen Botenstoff in den Monozytenzellkulturen geben muss, der die Wanderung von neutrophilen Leukozyten auslöst. Dieser wurde isoliert und als »neutrophil-activating factor« (NAF) bezeichnet. Zeitgleich wurde in den USA »monocyte-derived neutrophil chemotactic factor« (MDNCF) identifiziert. im Jahr 1987 wurden beide Substanzen publiziert. Später stellte sich dann heraus, dass es sich um dasselbe Zytokin handelte: IL-8.
