The Phase Diagram Si-C-O

  • Chapter
Si Silicon

Abstract

Due to the importance of the Acheson reaction between SiO2 and C, the Si-C-O phase diagram has been investigated several times, with systematic experimental investigations being performed by [1, 2]. Commonly only the well-known binary compounds have been found.— In phase diagram investigations no solid ternary phases have been detected, stated otherwise [3 to 5]. On oxidation of SiC under 1 atm O2.a phase with the probable composition Si4O4C4 was detected, existing mainly between 675 and 1425 K. Its existence was verified by physical methods, and a structural model was developed [6 to 8], see also [9].
