Abstract

As just described, basic knowledge of the German language must be proven before a study in Germany. Generally, German language skills on the level of B2 are required. For this reason, KAAD offers its scholarship holders a German language course in before the start of the studies. Depending on the already existing German language skills, the language course can last between 1 and 6 months. The complete costs are covered by KAAD. Those scholarship holders who have already successfully completed a German course either in Germany – if they were already in Germany at the time of application – or in their country of origin, do not have to take the KAAD German course in Bonn. However, only very few of the interviewees had previously taken a German course in their country of origin.

Notes

  1. 1.

Almost three quarters of the scholarship holders and alumni surveyed answered that they had acquired the German language “very intensively” or “intensively”. Accordingly, around 20% of the respondents answered “somewhat” and around 7% “a little”. Only 1% answered that they had not learned German at all (n = 378). Alumni who had learned only a little or no German also include those who studied in an English-language degree programme or wrote their doctoral thesis in English (or rather in Spanish).
