Abstract

The third chapter deals with the theoretical connections between power and organisation and explores the cultural-historical and philosophical prerequisites for explaining and delimiting the concepts of power, power encroachment and structural violence. The first section is dedicated to the topic of power as a social phenomenon and examines the historical development of the research of power starting from the texts of Machiavelli and Hobbes to those of Arendt, Foucault and Bourdieu. The second section deals with the destructive side of power: with abuse and violence, and opens up a view of the spaces of violence in Elias, Baumann and Baberowski. The third section deals with the relationship between organisation, structure and power as an essential theoretical prerequisite for the present study and investigation. The focus here remains on the aspects of political language, structural power asymmetry in organisations and formal and informal power structures in Crozier and Friedberg. The fourth section deals with the topic of organisational culture as a carrier of power. Finally, there is a section on the possibilities of measuring power and an outlook on alternatives.
