Abstract
Avian influenza is a major viral disease of wild birds and poultry in livestock and is caused by influenza A viruses. Infections result in major economic losses in the poultry industry. Influenza A viruses are simplistically characterized by the composition of two surface proteins of the virus particle, hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). There are 18 H types and 11 N types, which can occur in combination with each other, e.g. H5N1 or H7N9. Most of these types are also found in birds.
