Zusammenfassung
Randall Collins verknüpft in seiner Soziologie eine Konflikttheorie sozialer Prozesse, eine Ritualtheorie (die aus zwei Quellen stammt, von Emile Durkheim und von Erving Goffman) sowie eine Mikroorientierung, die neben Goffman auf die weitere Tradition des symbolischen Interaktionismus zurückgeht. Aus Webers Soziologie entnimmt Collins die Annahme, dass der Kern der Sozialstruktur aus einer Schichtung entlang von Herrschaftsstrukturen besteht, von Durkheim die Annahme, dass die gesellschaftliche Solidarität aus einer Situation kollektiver Erregung (Efferveszenz) emergiert. Collins verknüpft dies mit der Interaktionssoziologie Goffmans.

Auch in anderer Hinsicht stellt sich die Frage, ob Collins’ Versuch, die Theorien der rationalen Wahl durch die Theorie einer Maximierung emotionaler Energie zu ersetzen, überzeugen kann. Viele Probleme der Theorien rationaler Wahl (so Altruismus und Anomalien) ergeben sich auch für sein Modell und der Verzicht auf ein kognitives Modell führt zu weiteren Schwächen (Greve 2011).
