Zusammenfassung
Das Etablieren der Diffusionstheorie als eigenständiger Forschungsansatz in der Kommunikationswissenschaft geht auf die 1962 erschienene Publikation von Everett M. Rogers, „Diffusion of Innovations“, zurück. Ursprünglich aus der Agrarsoziologie stammend entwickelte Rogers durch das Abstrahieren zahlreicher empirischer Befunde ein Modell für die Diffusion von Innovationen in sozialen Systemen. Die Theorie mittlerer Reichweite erlaubt es, diesen Prozess auf Mikro- und Makroebene zu modellieren: Es werden sowohl bestimmende Faktoren für eine individuelle Annahme einer Innovation als auch auf Systemebene genannt. Zudem stehen wahrgenommene Eigenschaften von Innovationen im Fokus, die eine Übernahme der Innovation für Individuen beschleunigen oder verlangsamen können. In der Kommunikationswissenschaft wird der Ansatz in zweierlei Hinsicht angewendet: Erstens ist die Diffusion von Innovationen ein im Wesentlichen durch Massenmedien und persönliche Netzwerke angetriebener Kommunikations prozess. Zweitens wird häufig die Übernahme von Medieninnovationen untersucht. Der Beitrag gibt sowohl Einblick in das Leben und Wirken von Everett M. Rogers als auch in die zentralen Inhalte der fünften überarbeiteten Auflage von „Diffusion of Innovations“ aus dem Jahr 2003. Darüber hinaus wird auf zentrale Kritikpunkte und Weiterentwicklungen des Werks eingegangen.
