Abstract
Gaseous substances that spread in the ambient air can cause different effects that affect both people and buildings/facilities. Safety engineering is therefore concerned with these effects and the necessary protective measures to prevent damage. In order to be able to monitor the effects of these protective measures, appropriate gas measuring devices are required. This chapter describes the different safety areas and takes a close look at the requirements for the corresponding gas detection technology.
Basically, safety technology can be divided into two areas, which relate to personal protection and building protection. This division is shown graphically in Fig. 18.1.
