Summary

The usefulness of a medical information system is determined by the type of communication system. In a clinical information system due regard should be given to the implementation of a “special branch language”.

To process (medical) text information, the computer will be given direct access to the data base in a special branch language which is very similar to a natural language. A method of key phrase indexing is demonstrated which can be applied where conventional methods do not suit the computing inputs of medical diagnosis.

Signification and syntactical structure of “standard key phrases” are discusses by means of a definitive grammatical model. Relative to the semantical interpretation, essential syntacmatical and paradicmatical relations are presented to permit the representation of key phrases in a semantical network.

Document retrieval systems on the basis of (key phrase) indexing as well as intelligence communication systems (consultation systems, expert systems, etc.) are explained. Finally, conclusions are drawn for the planning of computer processing medical text information in a medical information system.
