Hepatic Coma

  • Chapter
Neurocritical Care

Abstract

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) arises as a complication in fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) as well as in chronic liver failure. Initially it is characterized by minor mental and personality changes and discrete cognitive impairment. With progression there are prominent motor abnormalities, as well as increasing loss of consciousness until deep coma is present.
