Abstract
Barrett’s esophagus can be defined as the replacement of malpighian esophageal mucosa by columnar metaplasic mucosa. With regard to the pathogenesis of Barrett’s esophagus, there are two theories: one stating that it is congenital in origin and the other that it is acquired secondary to gastroesophageal reflux. The second theory is the more widely accepted since 20% of cases of peptic esophagitis are complicated by Barrett’s esophagus and columnar epithelium has been noted in 44% of patients with peptic stenosis.
