Abstract

A simple but rigorous approach provides a study of the nature of intra-Landau-level collective excitations of interacting electrons within the fractionally filled lowest Landau level. A finite gap, due to correlations in the density fluctuations of the centers of cyclotron orbits, or no gap, because of broken magnetic translational invariance, are shown to exist rigorously in the long—wavelength limit of low—lying collective modes in two condensed phases, i.e., an incompressible quantum liquid and a two—dimensional electron quantum solid, respectively. Methods of applying our approach to examine current approximations such as the single—mode and the self-consistent—phonon approximation will be indicated. Implications to be drawn about the fractional quantum Hall effect and the two-dimensional Wigner crystal from a comparison with experimental findings and with numerical small-system calculations are briefly discussed.
