Abstract
Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) techniques are here used to couple radiation into a structure composed of a Nematic liquid crystal (BDH-E7) confined between two aligning layers of obliquely evaporated SiOx. The liquid crystal when aligned is uniaxial in nature with refractive indices of 1.522 and 1.745 at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The ordinary index (1.522) of liquid crystal is relatively highland necessitates using high-index glass prisms (n = 1.800) as the semi-infinite medium on which the active silver laver is deposited.
