Free Radical Activity in Chronic Ethanol Intoxication in Humans

Abstract

Chronic ethanol poisoning is probably the commonest chemical intoxication in the world and yet one of the least understood. It can also be one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose in clinical practice. Much indirect evidence based on cell, tissue and animal studies suggests — and has done so for many years — that it is associated with increased, or at least altered, free radical activity. In humans, unfortunately, the evidence is much more sparse and far more difficult to interpret.
