Abstract

With 750 km2 of dumps, waste piles and residual holes, the Lausitz brown-coal district is the largest mining area in Germany. The extraction of brown coal generally occurs by surface mining. As a result, the surface rock layers are encallowed and dumped as overburden either on waste piles in the environs of the open mine or on dumps in worked-out open mine areas. Besides Quaternary surface rock layers, Tertiary overburden also appeared on the surface of the dumps and waste piles in the past owing to unspecific accretion.
