Abstract
The surgical management of hydrocephalus comprises drainage of cerebrospinal fluid into either the venous system or a serous cavity, via a tube containing a undirectional valve. Colonisation of the valve by organisms derived from the skin, and probably entering the system at the time of insertion (Cohen and Callaghan 1961), is a not uncommon complication, accounting for bacteraemia in 6.3% in one large series (Bruce et al. 1963). The association of glomerulonephritis with such infection is, however, a relatively infrequent event.
