Abstract
The introduction of coronary arteriography a quarter of a century ago permitted the recognition of coronary atherosclerosis and estimation of its prognosis based upon the presence and extent of atherosclerotic involvement, as well as on the degree of left ventricular dysfunction. After 25 years, however, there is a relative paucity of data regarding the prognosis of patients with less than severe coronary artery disease. This article is an attempt to summarize the pertinent literature describing the prognosis of patients with arteriographic evidence of mild to moderate involvement. The data are largely for patients studied by coronary arteriography in the 1960s. Less than severe coronary atherosclerosis, or mild to moderate disease, is defined as the presence of angiographic evidence of coronary artery narrowing not exceeding 50% of lumen caliber. Prognostic end points considered include mortality, myocardial infarction, and angiographic progression of disease.
