Distribution of Vasopressin, Oxytocin, Neurophysin, Somatostatin, and Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone-Producing Neurons

Neurosecretion and Neuroendocrine Activity

Abstract

The use of immunohistochemical techniques has confirmed the presence of neurohypophyseal and adenohypophysiotropic hormones within axons and axon terminals of the median eminence (see ZIMMERMAN, 1976). The magnocellular perikarya of the supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular nuclei (PVN) have also been confirmed as the sources of the neurohypophyseal hormones (BURLET et al., 1974; VANDESANDE et al., 1975). However, the location of the perikarya of origin of the “releasing and inhibiting hormones” remains a source of controversy. Using antisera capable of detecting somatostatin perikarya in normal animals, and LRH perikarya in castrated rats, we have begun a study on the topical neuroanatomy of neuroendocrine cells. We have taken the approach of using the magnocellular neurons of the hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal system as regional landmarks against which to compare the distribution of perikarya containing releasing and inhibiting hormones. We have also been able to identify a substantial amount of arginine vasopressin (AVP), oxytocin (OT), and neurophysin (NPh) containing fibers in several areas of the brain outside the hypothalamus.
