Abstract
Ryegrasses (Lolium spp.), together with the closely related fescues (Festucaspp.), are of significant value in temperate grasslands (Jauhar 1993). The commercially most important ryegrasses are Italian or annual ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.) and perennial ryegrass (L. perenne L.). They are the key forage species in countries where livestock production is an intensive enterprise, such as The Netherlands, the UK, and New Zealand (Buckner et al. 1967).
