Abstract

This paper presents a new approach to the estimation of preoperative prostate cancer volume using clinically correlated prostate needle core biopsy simulation on a large number of digitized prostatectomy speciemns with clinically localized cancers. The analysis of the 10-pattern and the sextant protocols on cancer volume estimation with age, race PSA, prostate volume, number of positive cores, and 2-way and 3-way interactions of these varaibles in the original regression model as predictors revealed that only three of these variables and two 2-way interactions are needed to estimate prostate cancer volume. The model consists of the main effects of prostate volume, number of positive cores, and PSA plus the 2-way interactions of prostate volume with number of positive cores and prostate volume with PSA, and it explains as much as 40% of the variance of the log cancer volume.
