Zusammenfassung

Ängstlichkeit und Angststörungen bei Älteren sind bisher noch vergleichsweise wenig untersucht worden, obwohl Angsterkrankungen auch im höheren Lebensalter zu den häufigsten psychischen Erkrankungen zählen. Die epidemiologischen Angaben über die Prävalenz von Angststörungen im Alter schwanken in den verschiedenen bisher durchgeführten Studien zwischen 5% und 20% (Regier et al. 1988; Lindesay et al. 1989; Myers et al. 1984). Einige Autoren berichten, dass Angststörungen im Alter weniger häufig seien als in jungen Jahren und seltener neu aufträten (Myers et al. 1984; Eaton et al. 1989; Robins et al. 1984), obwohl Angstsymptome genauso wie bei Jüngeren vorhanden sind oder sogar in der Häufigkeit zunehmen (Gurin et al. 1963; Warheit 1986). Phobien und generalisierte Angststörungen machen den größten Teil der Angststörungen im Alter aus (Flint 1994).
