Abstract

In 2003 the online journal Computerwoche referred a study of the University of California in Berkley about the increase of globally archived data: Every 3 years the amount of archived data doubles. The scientists counted two to three Exabyte in 1999 and five Exabyte in 2002. Data volumes in specific disciplines are much smaller than in others but the increase of annual production rates is comparable. In connection with the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) collected around 60 Terabyte of global climate model data. Data management for the next IPCC Assessment Report (AR5) which is scheduled for 2013 plans for at least 2 PetaByte (PB) of data related to the AR5.
